As the clock strikes midnight on his 65th birthday, megamogul Bill Parrish's life is turned upside down by the unexpected arrival of Death himself, disguised as Joe Black, a charming and eccentric young man from another era. As part of their Faustian bargain, Parrish agrees to host Joe for a "vacation" among the living in exchange for a few more days of existence. As Joe navigates the complexities of modern life, he becomes fascinated with human experience and begins to question his own purpose. Meanwhile, Bill's family and business associates are confused by his sudden change in behavior, as he finds himself torn between his duty to his legacy and his newfound friendship with Joe.
